Pasternak 12:12:12 Winnipeg Spirit

1912-2012
PASTERNAK SPIRIT
LIVES ON IN WINNIPEG BEYOND HIS YEARS

I was at the library when a woman walked up to me and told me that I was in a photograph in a book upstairs. The title of the book is Winnipeg 1912, and below is the photograph she was referring to. I could not believe it. This was one of the strangest things in my life. This photograph was 100 years old!
When I was younger people would tell me upon meeting me, that they thought I would be older somehow.

I had to commemorate the event this year by doing something. So I decided to make a simple poster and put it up around the city. People that know me totally freak out because they automatically assume that it is a picture of me. In fact I have a hard time seeing anyone else beside myself as this person in the photo. It is me I conclude. But my grounded self proclaims that it cannot possibly be so. I have yet to find out who the picture is really of. But come to think of it, I have yet to find out who I really am.

Hot NakUniverse Doc

Winnipeg filmmaker Patrick Lowe is making a 30 minute documentary about Pasternak Universe.

WOW. Filming starts today!

I am excited as well as nervous about all this, but mostly thrilled. And even more happier that Patrick is doing this. He had been telling me for years now that he's wanted to do a film about me(about my art really) and I know he will do an out of this world job.  He showed me a 5 minute preliminary treatment from some test footage he took and I was already blown away. This documentary will be available on MTS On Demand and as well, Patrick plans on sending it out to film festivals. To top it off, Patrick's brother Greg Lowe (famed veteran musician, whom I did the artwork on his first Jazz CD cover back in 1991) will be creating original music for this flick.

Out in the spring. Stay tuned.

Get'em

NEW ACID MAN AVAILABLE

Issues No. 30,  No.32,  No.33

The continuing sag.
No.30 has a nice cover and 16 pages of writing writ and wrought.
Thoughtful art and questionable mind.
No.32 has 8 stiff pages and is a bit more artsy (that's code for WTF).
FIND Acid Man on every page.
No.33 is a very fair artifactual likeness of one of my pocket drawing books but the drawings are culled from 4 books from 1992-1993. Made with the same materials as I would use for my own sketchbooks and includes attachments, found inserts and an original one-of-a-kind photo cover on each. WoW! 32 pages. The only thing I did not do is wear it out in my back pocket for a month but I can do that for you for an extra fee. Only 30 made.

Available nowhere yet! Just from me. Contact hurry today write fast call right now. Get'em.

What happened to No.31 you ask? I did it ages ago. It's the one with Nostradamus.
Right now I'm working on No.29.

NEWS OLDS

PREVIOUSLY - while settling in to the new...

LOGOS
... new Split Studio Space, the SSS. I draw, assemble and digitize in one space and I paint in another. The light is fantastic in one and not so light-fantastique in the other. One of these spaces has a huge graphic on the wall, an artifact from the seventies I am sure. I have recreated it here and I am using it on my business cards. It seems to suit me and my space well.

ALSO

Many new paintings have emerged from the new SSS. See the Painternak link to the right.

THE HAND SEES

The other day I was in my favorite antique & funk shop and came across a self portrait  I did 29 years ago. I had given it to my girlfriend at the time as a Christmas gift. It was so nice to see it again! I was surprised at how vibrant it was and that It was well taken care of. I wonder what happened? I hope that the other paintings that I gave her and her family are still alive and in good care.

It's Moving Time

The studio is marching down another path. After 21 years in the same spot in downtown Winnipeg, it is time to dust off all my stuff and roll on over to a new mossing site. It's hard. I won't lie. And I can't take it all with me either. But here I go into a new frontier. Still doing art, but all is uncertain at the moment.

Same e-mail address. Different space. Different me.

Notes from Nowhere: Super Winnipeg Super 8
Curated by Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan

-exert from the program-

Winnipeg is an impoverished city, famous for its frigid winters and its artists. Sustained by cheap studio rent and fantastic thrift-store finds, the creative class thrives in the geographic centre of North America. There is very little cool factor to living in the middle of nowhere, so most of us just keep out heads down, get our work done, and try to keep the tips of our ears from freezing. Very little changes in Winnipeg.

Perhaps that is what makes the archaic technology of Super 8 neither outrĂ© nor hip. It simply is: a vehicle for ideas, images and experimentation. Friends come together to make something. It doesn’t cost very much. Like Ed Ackerman, you can even develop your own footage in the kitchen sink. Whether the subject matter is, like Deco Dawson’s, seemingly hundred-year-old gestural studies or, like Jaimz & Karen Asmundson’s, an unselfconsciously goofy celebration of place, the particulars of the form continue to enamour. Super 8 looks like memory and is similarly malleable. Winnipeg filmmakers continue to use it to create works that seem to exist outside of time, that reference an earlier time or that simply mark time with chemical collisions and light. Films by Robert Pasternak, Mike Maryniuk, Jaimz & Karen Asmundson, Noam Gonick, Deco Dawson, Heidi Phillips and Ed Ackerman.
