Starlight Starbright

https://polarborealis.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/POLAR-STARLIGHT-24-August-2026.pdf

A new issue of Polar Starlight is available for free online.

I am so happy to have my art on the cover and even more-so because it’s a drawing I did back in 1983, a very early work of mine and it’s now having an opportunity to see some (star)light. There is a lot of my early work that I don’t discount or cringe when I see it because it’s early and I was in a  ‘developing’ stage as an artist. Even back then I was doing so many different types of work that there never really was any development. When I decided to be an artist at age 14 I was always playing with different types of imagery and ideas. Things just came out of me of whatever my interest was or what corner of my subconscious wanted out. It was hard to compare one work to the next. My development came in my earlier years when I just copied everything. I was very good at it and my older brother Gary taught me critical scrutinizing skills and the pushing or expanding of one’s imaginary boundary to make something… anything better, more interesting or dynamic.

PENCIL CRAYON TIME

Here is a recent pencil crayon drawing I finished to display at a Science Fiction convention held here in Winnipeg every year in May. I had not worked in pencil crayon for many many years. Most of my pencil crayon drawings were done in the eighties alongside my painting. I'm excited now to do more.
I am showing the process at which i do these. I sketch directly on the black paper with no other preliminary drawings. This is a 9 x 12 inch drawing. Every step is a thinking process as to what colors are going where and how I am going to fill the space. Sometimes I spend more time thinking about my next move than actually drawing. In the past I would sometimes do the drawing with all it's shading with white then go over that with the colors.
