Focus On Canadian Comics in Angoulême

This weekend at the Angoulême comic book festival in France, a showcase of Canadian comics from all across Canada are on display of which I am happy to be part of.

Oh boy, 16 BIG pages of abstract comics for the Sunday Sequential. An edition of 50 copies were made. Get’em before my hair dries! $20. These were printed in Glasgow Scotland by Newspaper Club. My hair should be dry by the time I’m finished reading.

Angoulême International Comic Book Festival

Recently I had the pleasure to part of the Canadian constituency of Comic Book Authors attending the Angoulême Comic Book Fest in Angoulême France. I was there to promote Place Into Being, a collection of my abstract and experimental comics published by At Bay Press. Here I am at the Canadian booth with a few other of my wares

The Better Book Club

An intimate reading and discussion series, featuring authors and artists published by At Bay Press. Every Monday, we will host a session via Zoom with live-streaming on Youtube and Facebook for 8 weeks, starting Monday, January 4th 2021. Each week, an At Bay Press author (and artist if the book is a graphic novel or visual book) will read from their latest novel, poetry collection, or graphic novel. Readings will be followed by an open discussion with attendees, just like a regular book club, but better since the author of the work will be in attendance! 

Each registrant will receive a free e-book (pdf format) of the work being read and discussed prior to the event. Each event will be approximately 1 hour long. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to hear from your favourite authors and be able to speak directly with them from the comfort of your own home.

About the book: Robert Pasternak (NAK) is a virtuoso of the sequential art form. An adept panelologist and painstaking craftsman. Despite a loyal and attentive following, awareness of his work is limited. In many ways, what may appear to be a constraint is part of the NAK mystery and lore. The abstract comics medium is highly complex and only vaguely understood. For NAK, it’s merely a brushstroke. Yet, to define this artwork as abstract could be considered derivative. To the observer, NAK is ocular candy. Psychedelic sensuality.

Delve into the NAK experience, an explorative expedition contained in this first published volume of his work. This creative journey will compositionally challenge and cerebrally stretch the current understanding of comics.Each registrant will receive a free e-book (pdf format) of the work being read and discussed prior to the event.

About the author: Robert Pasternak (NAK) is an artist, father, illustrator, graphic designer, novelty product inventor / manufacturer and filmmaker, spanning the themes of the cosmic, surreal, technological, metaphysical and what it means to be human. He has been creating and exhibiting his art for almost 40 years. His science fiction illustrations have appeared on Amazing Stories and On Spec magazine, on book covers for Guy Vanderhague and Timothy Findley. In 1994 he won the Aurora award in Canadian Sci-Fi art. In 2012 The Wonderful Worlds of Nak, a documentary by Patric Lowe was produced by MTS.

CANZINE 2017 & NEW STUFF

JOIN ME at CANZINE & the ANARCHIST BOOK FAIR this SATURDAY at the MILLENNIUM LIBRARY in WINNIPEG!

I always have NEW STUFF!!

INKLINGS is a new book of INK doodles 8.5 x 5.5 in. printed on heavy green card stock.

COMXSTRIP is a set of 4 comic strips each individually boxed - 2.625 x .75 x .75 in.
Each strip is 2.25 in. wide and unrolls to 14 inches long.

MEANWHILE... this past spring I printed up (at KROMAR printing) a collection of my abstract & surreal comics called Meanwhile...

At Bay Press has agreed to publish a very large and exceptional collection of my new graphic/abstract comic work! 80 full color pages of art. 8.5 x 12 in. Scheduled release date is tentatively Fall 2018.

ZOiKs KaBlaMo ABstract-O-RaMo !  I can't wait.
In 2013 after moving out of my studio of 22 years and contemplating on being a City of Winnipeg Transit driver, my comics, if they were not already abstract enough, took an inevitable wider left turn,  then up and sideways. It'll be quite a diverse collection. I've really been having a lot of fun exploring and experimenting. This book will be mostly single page pieces along with some 2 and 3-page comics as well.

Prairie Comics Festival & Acid Man

I will be presenting all of my comics, comix, minis, books and novelties at this years 2nd Annual Prairie Comics Festival May 6th - 7th, 2017. It's FREE to attend and is in a very nice venue for the second time at the Millenial Library in downtown Winnipeg. The only thing different is that it runs for two days this year.

The following weekend is TCAF in Toronto which I will be going to to mill about and trade comics!

Here below are two of my recent Acid Man Society books, No.40, Man Macine unfolds to a geo-abstract comic on one side of a sheet with many words about evolution and consciousness on the other side. No.41, ONA has a more traditional comic panel layout with a fun story about an young eye leaving home.

This inaugural event will host a juried selection of independent artist, writers, craft-makers and publishers for a full day of interaction and panel discussions.

I will have a host of my comic book related publications, mini comix and novelties for your perusal and purchase. NEW is the Re-issue of AM No.25 - The Chewy Crunchy Rollup Scroll of Comix pictured above. Yes a complete comic strip in each package! Each one unrolls to about 30"long. Also new is the Incredible Solid & Liquid Co-Mix. These are Double Bubble-sized packs containing my Abstract Comix. 12-15 comix in each for a long lasting visual and mental Chew.

UPPERCASE Magazine for it's 29th issue had an open call to artists that incorporated cutting and/or folding into their practice and I thought I might just fit in perfectly as I am always cutting and folding paper and card stock to make my books and novelty items. So I sent off a number of my recent projects and out of 555 submissions I was one of the 1/5th of acceptances into that issue. It's a fantastic issue! 

  

***********  30  YEARS  AGO  ***********

HOLY CROW, my first mini comic is 30 years old this year! It almost passed me by as I had not thought about it much lately. But I did remember and on the occasion printed some new copies that I will be taking to TCAF. It was originally published by Jeff Gaither in February 1986 out of Kentucky through his Dark Horse imprint. This comic actually, unbeknowst to me has the first appearance of Acid Man who would come into his own in the continuing Acid Man Society books and novelties.
